Polar Bear

The polar bear is one of the most fun and exciting trips that Troop 8 does! It involves going to camp greilick in northern Michigan (around traverse city), which provides a fun playground for learning cross-country skiing. We start out on friday night skiing in to camp with our packs set up camp in the snow (This means that you will need a well fitted backpacking backpack). On saturday we spend the day doing massive whole troop snowball fights and cross-country skiing around camp. We also spend some time building various snow shelters, ski jumps, and snow kitchens. On sunday we will ski out to the cars and do some general tomfoolery, before driving back home.

Being out in the wilderness in the middle of winter does mean that it will be cold. This means that bringing the right gear is a must, so therefore we will have a gear check the tuesday before this trip. If you do not get gear checked you can’t go on this trip but, if you can't make the gear check meeting you can schedule a different one with your patrol leader. No need to buy cross-country skis we will have rentals available, but feel free to bring your own pair if you already have them.
