Intro to Backpacking

To kick off our backpacking unit for the year, we will be going to the fantastic Allegheny National Forest! We will be hiking in the beautiful Minister Valley, on the aptly named Minister Valley Hiking Trail Loop. The trail is 6 miles in total and has multiple large rock foundations, perfect for bouldering, caving, and messing around. The valley is located in Northern Pennsylvania and has fantastic views of the surrounding mountains. Aside from the interesting rock formations, Minister Valley has lots of rolling hills and pretty stream crossings. During the intro to backpacking, we will also teach/refresh you on certain technical aspects of backpacking, such as pack-packing, and trail safety.

This weekend is an intro to backpacking for everyone and has no prerequisite. There is no gear check for this trip, so make sure that you are prepared with all of the gear from the attached gear list. The weather may well drop to the low thirties at night so bringing proper clothing and sleeping equipment is essential. Additionally, scouts should make sure to bring well-fitting hiking boots with ankle support and a properly fit backpack. If you have any doubt of whether your boots or pack are properly sized, you should contact your patrol leader. Additionally, you should make sure to bring enough money for two road meals.

Make sure to sign up with your patrol leaders before October 3rd.
